The Pomegranate series originates from the performance piece Pomegranate piece,2022, in which the fruit serves as a central metaphor. The performance involved chewing pomegranate, spitting the seeds into balloons, sewing them onto a dress, and ultimately causing their explosion. This process evolved into a series of soft sculptures, installations, and experimental films, expanding the material and conceptual exploration of containment, embodiment, and ephemerality.

As a multimedia work, Pomegranate, Womb,2023 exists as both a sculptural installation and an immersive film. Constructed from textile and fiber materials, the soft sculpture is built around a tent-like framework. At its core, a kiddie pool filled with sealed Orbeez—water-absorbing beads that expand into gel-like spheres—creates a tactile environment evoking the sensation of enclosure and bodily suspension.

In 2024, Pomegranate, Womb extended into a short film shot from within the sculpture itself, shifting it from a static object to an immersive, experiential space. While the installation invites participants to enter its enclosed, womb-like structure, access remains inherently limited. The film translates this spatial and sensory experience beyond the physical sculpture, emphasizing its materiality and affec
tive presence.

Yuhan collaborated with Skylar Gong to reenact the performance at SVA Flatiron Project Space. In this iteration, the soft sculpture of the "pomegranate" became an active element within the performance, shifting from an enclosed environment to an open, tactile presence. Through a series of symbolic actions—reenacting birth, chanting, feeding each other pomegranate, being covered in pomegranate juice, engaging in body entanglement, and ultimately offering the audience the last pomegranate fruit—the piece unfolded as a meditation on maternity, female identity, power dynamics, and vulnerability. The act of sharing and staining became a visceral exchange, blurring the boundaries between nourishment and sacrifice, creation and dissolution, care and control.
